Position Announcement: Laboratory Animal Advisor
The Animal Welfare Institute is accepting applications for the full time position of laboratory animal advisor.
Requisites for the position include a genuine reverence for living creatures; the facility to express compassion for animals kept in research laboratories and educational institutions; not to be categorically against research with animals; and not to be categorically in favor of research with animals.
Additionally, candidates must have several years of experience with traditional and refined housing and handling practices of at least one nonhuman primate species and at least one non-primate species commonly found in research laboratories.
Respondents must be familiar with professional and scientific literature pertaining to the housing and handling of animals assigned to research and teaching projects, and have published several professional or scientific articles (a copy of one article must accompany the application). He/she must publish articles on species-adequate housing and stress-mitigating handling of animal species commonly found in laboratories.
The laboratory animal advisor may visit animal research facilities and provide advice on species-adequate housing and stress-mitigating handling of animal species typically found in laboratories. The candidate must also be comfortable representing the Animal Welfare Institute at professional and scientific meetings.
At three-month intervals, two annotated databases on Environmental Enrichment and Refinement for Animals in Research Institutions shall be managed and updated. Comments shall also be written on federal draft regulations and professional draft guidelines on housing and handling of animals kept in research laboratories.
No specific academic or professional diplomas are required to apply for this position, and candidates may specify salary expectation.

INTERNSHIPS
LEGISLATIVE INTERNS
AWI seeks two legislative interns every fall, spring, and summer. This is a great opportunity for law students, political science students, or anyone with a passion for making a difference in the lives of animals. Interns will assist our government and legal affairs staff in maintaining updated Hill contact lists, delivering documents to and attend meetings with Congressional offices and assisting staff in research; as well as miscellaneous tasks of an administrative nature. No specific academic major is required; however, preferred candidates will have a strong work ethic and be willing to take on any project. Interns may work full-time or part-time and can arrange to receive course credit. These positions are located in our Capitol Hill office and are unpaid.
FARM ANIMAL INTERNS
AWI is offering internships for persons interested in being involved in AWI’s work to protect farm animals. Applicants must be willing to assist with basic support including but not limited to correspondence; tracking legislation; data collection; computer, telephone and library research. Part-time or full-time positions available. Projects are diverse but generally fall into one of these areas – factory farming, long distance transport, handling at slaughter. WILDLIFE INTERNS
AWI offers two on-site internships every fall, spring, and summer for persons enthusiastic about our work to protect wildlife, both terrestrial and aquatic. We also accept one to two off-site/remote interns if needed. Applicants must be willing to assist with basic support including but not limited to data collection, computer, telephone and library research. SAFE HAVEN PROGRAM INTERNS
Part time intern(s) needed to assist with updating information about “safe haven” programs , i.e., domestic violence (DV) shelters that also will take a victim's pets or help her place them safely. Individuals involved with this project call DV shelters to find out if they provide such services and if so, whether they are on site or referrals. The calling list and a script are provided, and calls made be made from one’s home during weekday hours anytime between 9:00 to 5:00. Hours worked per week: negotiable. This project is an important part of an AWI effort to develop a training program and technical assistance network for prosecutors to help them better handle animal abuse/animal fighting prosecutions; this updated information will be made available to them.
