In 1971, AWI launched the Save the Whales Campaign.  AWI remains committed to the fight against Japanese, Norwegian and Icelandic efforts to force the International Whaling Commission to approve resumption of commercial whaling.

Whaling

Despite the ban on commercial whaling that came into effect in 1986, whaling still occurs.  Since the ban, close to 25,000 whales have been killed by Japanese, Norwegian and Icelandic whalers.  Other countries, including the US and Denmark also whale for aboriginal subsistence purposes.  AWI is an accredited observer at the annual meetings of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), the body established in 1946 to enforce the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling.

Noise

AWI works to stem the proliferation of human-generated ocean noise.  Such anthropogenic noise can harm marine animals and can range from disturbance of behavior to injury and death.

Other Threats to Marine Animals

AWI is also involved in combating other threats to marine animals.  These include strengthening protective legislation and combating the capturing and killing of small cetaceans, including dolphins and porpoises.
