The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1951 to reduce animal suffering caused by people. We seek better treatment of animals everywhere—in research, in oceans and wildlands, in agriculture, in commercial trade, and in our communities. With approximately 30 staff and consultants, AWI is headquartered on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.

AWI is accepting applications for the full-time position of Policy Analyst in our Animals in Laboratories Program. The individual filling this position will have compassion for all animals and a particular interest in helping animals kept in research laboratories and educational institutions. Position Summary

  • Regulatory oversight. The Policy Analyst’s primary role will be to advocate much-needed oversight governing the use of animals in research in the United States. Responsibilities will include drafting formal comments to government agencies, and describing the strengths and weaknesses of current and proposed changes to oversight of animal housing, care, handling and use (federal laws/regulations, certifications, and guidelines) to better inform the public, politicians, government officials, and those engaged in the use of animals in research. The role will also require representing AWI at relevant meetings and conferences related to the use of animals in research by staffing exhibits, giving presentations, and being willing to openly challenge and raise questions as an audience member in various forums in order to ensure proper consideration of the welfare of animals. 
  • Writing articles for AWI’s magazine. The position will require writing original articles for publication in the AWI Quarterly magazine on topics related to the use of animals in research, testing, and education, including conditions at dealer premises and laboratories.

Requirements

  • Uncompromised ability to be a strong advocate for animals in research  
  • A good understanding of the US research laboratory oversight systems, including laws and regulations, or an interest in and ability to quickly acquire such understanding
  • Knowledge of traditional and refined methods of housing and handling animals commonly used in research, or an interest in and ability to quickly acquire such knowledge
  • Knowledge of or experience with alternatives to the use of live animals in research, testing, and education, or an interest in and ability to quickly acquire such knowledge
  • Strong writing skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including public speaking 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in science, public policy, or government relations)
  • DVM, PhD or JD in relevant discipline a plus (with commensurate increase in salary)

Job Location
It is preferred that the Policy Analyst work at AWI’s headquarters in Washington, DC, a suite of historic row houses on Capitol Hill, in a hybrid work situation. Remote work will be considered.

Salary and benefits
Salary is commensurate with education and experience. The anticipated range for individuals with a bachelor’s degree is between $40,000 and $60,000. Benefits include full medical and dental insurance, 401(k) plan with employer contribution, and paid leave. If working from AWI headquarters, on-site parking and commuter benefit program are available.
