AWI at United Nations Ocean Noise Meeting

AWI’s Susan Millward participated in the 19th meeting of the UN Open-Ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea, held in June in New York, where the topic was anthropogenic ocean noise. During the week-long meeting, Susan chaired a side event on managing ocean noise on the high seas through a negotiated agreement. The UN is currently conducting negotiations on how to manage the high seas; since ocean noise is a transboundary, multisource pollutant that affects all types of marine life, this event was timely—as evidenced by the standing-room-only crowd. The outcome of the Consultative Process meeting will be discussed by the UN General Assembly in the fall, where we anticipate that a resolution will emerge that outlines next steps.
