One of the major concerns of the public today is the veil of secrecy that surround much of the research and testing with laboratory animals, a situation which creates public suspicion [p. 120]. Finally, the overriding and deepest concern of the public regarding research on laboratory animals is the total subjection of these animals to the will and whims of their masters, in conditions which at best for humans are generally reserved as punishment for those found guilty of crimes against society and, at worst, if inflicted on humans, would be described as cruel and unusual punishment, torture, and violation of human rights; and all of this with no prospect of release.
