This project was started to give staff at Wild Discovery a better understanding of our giant anteater’s health and physical condition through husbandry training and conditioning. The aim of the training was to allow staff to: 1) perform full body health checks; 2) monitor weight; 3) administer medication; and 4) carry out veterinary procedures through cooperative behaviour. Training with the anteater was carried out in both free and semi protective contact with the use of a protection board. This article describes the successful training process.
