Using an existing gang cage designed for ferrets, we developed a version that would be suitable for housing rats. Caging consisted of 3 floors with a combined floor area of 11620m, connected by 2 ladders. Each individual unit can be interconnected by a PU Flex-Tube. Ten CRL:WI male rats were observed. The general demeanour and behaviour of the stock rats housed in the gang cages is markedly more positive and calm compared with that of rats housed in traditional P2000 caging. Rats do not startle when a technician enters the room, nor do they attempt to escape when the doors to their cage are left open. Rats interact more positively with technicians. Rats exhibit a hopping gait.
